That One Day is Now

Some Day often becomes Never.”

This is the year right? This is the year that we're going to make it all happen for ourselves, whatever that means to each of us. Often at the top of the year we make resolutions, set goals…  Many are relatively small and often they are “simple” - NOT -  things such as exercising more, losing the excess weight, eating healthier; we’re going to get organized, clear the basement, the attic, the garage... We’re going to learn something new and develop some level of competence around cooking, photography, salsa, chess, understanding the stock market better... Maybe even starting a business. WhatEVER those things are for you, THIS is the year. So we say. But if you're anything like me - and so many others - we start out with the best of intentions. Jazzed. We get into it and start the things. We may investigate the class, check exercise programs, set the alarm to take a walk before the day gets at us, buy the fresh journal... But “life” seems to seep in at some point and starts distracting us - beating us down a little with the “must dos” and the mundane errands - pick up stuff at the dry cleaners, bring the car in for service, call the plumber about the leaky faucet - the overwhelm with deadlines of a job can make you tired and the positivity and resolve around those once exciting possibilities starts to wane, diluting the vision and depleting some of the joy.

The Good News, we’re not alone. Whatever these things are, this seems to be the common experience. In fact numerous studies have shown that about 80% of us fall off all resolutions by mid-February - some even earlier. Surprising and discouraging. Or it can be. But by knowing this statistic we can decide - right here and right now - that it’s going to be different this time. And mean it. We will be the 20% that soldiers on with determination to start doing the thing, and uncovering what lights us up. If you’ve already fallen off the wagon and abandoned some of those goals, climb back on if they’re still relevant. Because if not now, when?

From time-to-time I remind myself of a lesson “learned” years ago. I was in the third grade in our kitchen after dinner. My mom and dad were at the table talking about a vacation cabin we had rented for a few weeks and my mother said “Wally, some day I’d like to have a spot like that” and my dad replied “That one day is NOW!” He promptly called the realtor and bought the place over the phone! I remember him doing this same thing many other times as well: spontaneously buying a sports car, quitting “the rat race” in New York, returning to acting, buying a small business on the spot because he liked the “romance” of the place… Perhaps some of these decisions should have been made with a little more thought, but what I did - and do admire - is that he went after what he wanted and recognized that “Some Day” often becomes Never.

Though I have shared those examples of taking action as inspiration to others I certainly have not always taken the advice BUT… That One Day is Now!
